LIMA — Helen M. Spencer, 84, of Lima, passed away at 1:34 a.m. on Sunday at Lima Memorial Hospital.
She was born on June 5, 1932 in McGuffey to Charles R. and Lottie Hazel (Steele) King, who both preceded her in death. On Nov. 30, 1948, she married W Max Spencer, who survives in Lima.
Helen was a foster parent for 17 1/2 years for over 386 children. Helen and Max received the award for "Foster Parents of the Year" in the State of Ohio in 1984. She was a member of the Eagles Aerie 370 Auxiliary, Lima. She loved canning produce from her garden and drinking coffee and visiting with her friends. Helen enjoyed going to drive-in movies, camping, country music and scratch-off lottery tickets. Above all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are her son, Jack J. (Nancy) Spencer Jr. of Delphos; her daughter, Dawn (Tim) Colley of Alexandria, Virginia; her four grandchildren; her six great-grandchildren; her brother, Robert L. "Bob" King of Lima; her sisters Betty Jean Yost of Lima and Catherine Marshall of Sturgis, Michigan; her special canine friend Patchie; and special friends Rose Martin, Dustin Martin and Steve Martin.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jack L. Spencer; her sister, Mildred Shepherd; half-brother, Clyde Steele; her brothers-in-law, Eli Yost and Lee Marshall; sister-in-law, Cora King; and one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Eastside Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 2-6 p.m. and on Wednesday at
Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Eastside Chapel.
Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
