COLDWATER – The Crestview Knights used a late game rally to defeat the Lincolnview Lancers in the baseball District Semifinals Wednesday 3-2.

The Lancers got out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Gavin Carter drove in Chayten Overholt to score the first run of the game and give Lincolnview a 1-0 advantage. Collin Overholt flew out to center field to end the inning as the Lancers left two runners on.

After being retired in order for the bottom of the second, the Lancers tacked on another run in the third inning. Jaden Youtsey hit an RBI single that brought in Chayten Overholt at stretch the lead to 2-0 in favor of Lincolnview. The Lancers failed to capitalize and left the bases juiced to end the inning.

Carter was in his groove through the first four innings of work. He struck out 11 Crestview batters and only allowed one baserunner until the fifth. The Knights loaded the bases with one out but couldn’t bring them around to score as Carter worked out of the jam perfectly.

Two straight walks to start the top of the sixth gave Crestview some hope. Dylan Hicks knocked a single to left that loaded the bases as Griffin Painter stepped to the plate. He blasted one to left field that scored Brett Schumm and Caden Hurless to tie the game at 2-2. Korbin Hartman plated Dylan Hicks on a sacrifice fly and gave Crestview their first lead of the night.

Chayten Overholt hit a double early in the seventh, but three straight fly balls ended the game. The Crestview Knights will advance to the District Finals on Friday when they face the Minster Wildcats.

Crestview head coach Jim Wharton was happy to advance in the tournament “Gavin Carter was just dealing at the start of the game and we had no answer for it. We kept making adjustments and finally broke it open in the sixth. Our kids kept plugging away and that shows how resilient they are.”

Lincolnview coach Eric Fishpaw was disappointed to see the season come to a close but was grateful for a tremendous year. “I can’t thank my senior enough. We wouldn’t be the program that we are without Chayten Overholt and Ethan Parsons. I also want to thank our coaching staff. They put in countless hours in the off-season and I can’t thank them enough.”
