— The Lincolnview Lancers travelled back to the Crestview Athletic
Complex at Crestview High School to resume a Northwest Conference
matchup against the rival Knights.
A big first frame that started
on April 10 — before rains caused the game to be suspended — held up for
the Knights as they went on to beat the Lancers 3-1 on Tuesday.
Knights got started — last Monday — with walks from Caden Hurless and
Brant Richardson before Spencer Rolsten got a base hit to bring home the
first run of the game. Luke Gerardot walked before being retired at
second base on a fielder’s choice to give Lincolnview one out but it was
2-0, Knights. The game was halted with two runners on and one away in
the home first.
Though Jaden Youtsey was on the hill when the game
was called, it was Ethan Kemler toeing the rubber for the restart. The
Knights had a planned squeeze to start the game as Zech Simerman laid
down the bunt to bring home the third run of the game.
A caught stealing of home after a missed bunt and groundout back to the pitcher ended the bottom of the first, 3-0 Crestview.
had a plan to send the runner [from first] on the first pitc,h then go
back-to-back squeeze plays,” Crestview coach Jim Wharton said. “With
Kemler on the mound, that didn’t change anything. We were fortunate to
get the one across because Kemler threw well today. He has a really good
two-seamer and it was moving very well with the wind today. We left
eight guys on base and that is way too many.”
The Lancers got a
walk by Reece Farmer to put a runner on against Rolsten, who resumed his
start on the mound. After a bunt by Braxton Fox, Farmer was in scoring
position for Gavin Carter. Carter singled to right and Dylan Lee
grounded out to bring home the first run of the game for Lincolnview;
The Knights looked to get a run back in the bottom of the
second as Brett Schumm tripled to right-center field with one out.
Crestview loaded the bases after two walks but Kemler got fly balls to
Carter and Evans to end the bottom of the second.
The next big
scoring chance was the bottom of the fourth for Crestview (7-2, 3-0 NWC)
as a walk to Dylan Hicks and a double by Hurless put runners on second
and third with one out. Kemler was able to strike out the next two
batters to end that threat.
Lincolnview (2-8, 0-2 NWC) got a
single to open the top of the fifth as Carter singled through the left
side of the infield. A bunt advanced Carter to second base but he was
picked off when Rolsten quickly spun on the mound and threw a strike to
Simerman at the bag to tag out Carter.
The last roundup came for
Lincolnview in the top of the seventh as Farmer walked to start the
frame and even advanced all the way to third. Rolsten was able to retire
the next three Lancer batters to end the ball game.
innings for Kemler, giving up two hits; he pitched well today,”
Lincolnview head coach Eric Fishpaw said. “He is hungry after being hurt
his freshman year. He really wants the ball and he works ahead in
counts. We have a lot of faith in him as a young sophomore to keep us in
