DELPHOS – Chrissy Billiter was announced as the new Delphos Jefferson Head Girls Basketball Coach at the Delphos Jefferson Board of Education meeting on Monday, May 14, 2018.

Coach Billiter was Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Elida High School for 6 years. She is a member of the Elida Hall of Fame and played Division I Basketball.

Chrissy has also had coaching experience in JV Softball, 8th Grade Volleyball, 7th Grade Softball, 7th Grade Basketball, Freshman Girls Basketball and JV Girls Basketball all at Elida except one year at North Jr. High.

She graduated from Elida High School and received her degree in Elementary Education from Bowling Green State University.

Current athletic director Dave Hoffman believes Jefferson has made a great choice in Billiter. “Chrissy was the most qualified candidate that applied as far as experience goes. She has six years of varsity head coaching experience at Elida and is also involved in the youth programs. Her philosophy is along the same length as I had, and what we would like to continue.”

Billiter compiled a record of 46-93 in her 6 years at Elida. She finished 7-17 in the 2017-2018 campaign and went 2-7 in the Western Buckeye League. She is looking forward to her tenure at Jefferson. “I would be crazy to say I’m not disappointed in what happened at Elida, and people kept telling me when one door closes another opens up, but it’s hard. The position became available in Delphos and on my way to the interview I passed all the signs of support for both Jefferson and St John’s and thought, this is where I am supposed to be. Dave Hoffman has built the program at Delphos Jefferson and it is an incredible honor to follow in his footsteps,” Billiter said.

Members of the community have already extended their support for the new coach and Billiter is thankful. “The outpouring of support from the Delphos community has already been overwhelming.

Jefferson has also hired Kent Smelser as their new athletic director for the 2018-2019 school year. Hoffman will stay on to assist in the transition before turning over the reins to Smelser.

Also announced at the board meeting was the hiring of Kent Smelser as the new Delphos Jefferson Athletic Director.

Kent has previous experience as Athletic Director at Van Wert High School from 1998-2017. He was Van Wert Head Football Coach 1990-1995 and an assistant coach from 1999-2003 and again in 2017. He actually has football coaching experience dating back to 1978 at Celina as an assistant. Kent also coached Freshman Basketball, Varsity Track Assistant, and Jr. High Wrestling so he has many years with athletics.

Kent graduated from Celina High School and received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Bowling Green State University with receiving his Master of Arts in Physical from Miami University. He has been Commissioner for the Western Buckeye League from 2016 to the present.

“Kent is currently teaching in Paulding but will take over as athletic director next year. He was the athletic director at Van Wert for several years and helped out with the football program, as well as being the commissioner of the Western Buckeye League, so he has had a lot of experience in athletics,” Hoffman said.

Smelser is excited about the opportunity and looks forward to his time at Jefferson. “I’m very excited to get back in the field of athletics. I did it for 18 years and another year after retirement and I’m excited to once again work with student athletes,” he said.

Both Smelser and Billiter will begin to plan and prepare for their new jobs within the next few weeks.
