CONVOY — On April 10, Crestview led Lincolnview 4-0 after two innings when a downpour stopped the action.

The game resumed Tuesday and that lead proved to be enough as the Lady Knights held off the Lady Lancers 5-3.

Crestview is now 5-8 overall and 2-1 in the Northwest Conference. Lincolnview is 3-5 and 1-2.

Crestview’s big 4-run first inning on April 10 came via singles by left fielder Cora Millay and center fielder Sydney Bowen, followed by a Lancer error and a 2-run homer by third baseman Avery McCoy.

For the second night in a row, the Lady Knight bats weren’t nearly as hot Tuesday.

“We never know what team will get off the bus,” said Crestview coach Carl Etzler of his hitters. “I think we had 51 hits in three games (Paulding, Celina, Fort Recovery – all wins). In between was a 2-hitter by Bellmont (a loss), then last night I’m not sure whether we had three hits or four (it was four) against Spencerville (another loss). Our hitting is a little spotty and our defense is a little spotty right now. I’m concerned, because in about 10 days is the tournament draw, and who knows where we’ll be at that point in time.”

On Tuesday, the Knights made it 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth on a lead-off single by second baseman Caitlin O’Hagan, sacrifice bunt by shortstop Lexi Gregory, wild pitch, and RBI groundout by Millay, who was now catching.

Lincolnview made it interesting in the top of the fifth. With one out, second baseman Lana Carey’s wind-blown popup dropped in the right side of the infield for a single. Left fielder Kayla Schroeder was hit by a pitch. Right fielder Allison Berryman’s bunt to the right side was so perfect that Carey scored all the way from second and the Lancers had runners on the corners with one out. Center fielder Carly Wendel went down swinging but shortstop Lakin Brant bounced an RBI single through the right side, plating Schroeder. Catcher Alena Looser’s bloop single scored Berryman but Brant was nailed sliding into third to end the inning, Knights up 5-3.

Knight pitcher Victoria Lichtensteiger set the Lancers down 1-2-3 in the seventh to get the well-earned complete-game win. She yielded only three runs, all earned, on five hits while striking out eight and walking only one.

Lincolnview hurler Macala Ashbaugh also suffered through only one bad inning, that 4-run first, and was solid thereafter, yielding a total of five runs, four earned, on eight hits. She was remarkably efficient, walking nobody while striking out five, and 76 percent (58 of 76) of her pitches were strikes.

Bowen and O’Hagan had two hits apiece for Crestview. The extra-base hits came from first baseman Kristen Etzler, a double, and McCoy, a homer.

No Lancer had more than one hit, and all five of their hits were singles.

“We’re growing,” said Coach Etzler. “We’re doing a lot of things right, but we’re not doing some of the little things that it takes to advance down the tournament trail. The wind was a little tough tonight, but it was for both teams. We had a little popup, and we misplayed it, and that just opened the door. That forces Victoria to get four outs, maybe five outs an inning, and that’s tough to do.”
