MIDDLE POINT — Lincolnview went nearly six minutes without scoring during the fourth quarter and made just 1 of 8 free throws in the final minute, but held on for a 56-52 Northwest Conference win over Ada at the Barnyard on Thursday night.

Ada, which closes the regular season at 6-15 and 1-7 in league play, made nine 3-pointers on the day and senior standout Haley Wyss scored a game-high 24 points, but the Lancers used a significant rebounding edge to seal the game.

Even as the Lancers were firing up bricks at the line late, a string of three straight offensive rebounds - each coming off a missed free throw - late that sealed the fate of the Bulldogs.

“We just didn’t finish tonight by knocking down free throws. Luckily, we got some offensive rebounds there,” Lincolnview head coach Dan Williamson said. “There are definitely some more things to work on, but any time we can get a conference win, we will obviously take it.”

Lincolnview, now 12-10 and 4-4 in NWC action, outrebounded the Bulldogs 34-22 for the game. Kayla Schimmoeller led the way for Lincolnview, scoring 17 points on 8 of 10 shooting and grabbing 9 rebounds.

Lancer senior Katlyn Wendel closed her home career with 5 points and 5 rebounds before picking up her fifth foul and sitting out the final 1:01 of the game.

“She’s everything you want as a coach: hard worker, good leader, positive, she plays well offensively when we need her to, and she’s a solid defender,” Williamson said. “She’s always guarding taller players in the post, but she steps up to the challenge; she’s been a big reason why we’ve gotten 12 wins this year.”

Ada looked quite comfortable at the Barnyard in the first half, conning on each of its first four from beyond the arc. A Wyss trey gave the Bulldogs a 12-11 lead in the first period, but Lincolnview closed on a 6-0 spurt, including a put-back bucket by junior Kayla Schimmoeller, to end the quarter and take a 17-11 lead after eight minutes.

The Lancers extended their lead to eight early in the second when Alena Looser drilled a trey and Maddie Gorman scored on a fast break, and it was pushed to nine when Olivia Gorman connected on a triple moments later. Ada, then, took the opportunity to put together a run of its own, as Wyss and Alyssa Vore hit on back-to-back treys to close an 8-0 run. Minutes later, a tree from Madisyn Gossard put Ada in front 29-28. Wendel closed the half with a 3-point play off an offensive rebound to give her club a skinny 32-30 halftime edge.

Ada took the lead twice in the third quarter and had the game tied at 40-40 when Wyss knocked down a 28-foot 3-pointer with 3:33 left in the quarter. Thanks to second and third opportunities, however, Lincolnview closed the period on a 7-0 run, and extended that to 9-0 when Frankie Carey connected on a pair of free throws to start the fourth.

From that point, however, Ada began to chip away, thanks mostly to some frigid (0-for-7) shooting by the Lancers. Ada had closed to within 49-47 with 2:07 to play, but the Lancers, particularly Schimmoeller, flexed their rebounding muscles again. Schimmoeller grabbed an offensive board and broke the Lancer scoring drought with 1:34 left, then came up with a steal at the other end and scored on a breakaway for a 53-47 scoreboard.

“They had a made a run at us and cut it to two (points),” Williamson said. “We were getting good shots, but just couldn’t put them in. Schimmoeller stepped up big. She made some big plays for us in the fourth quarter.”

Though Lincolnview left the door open by missing 7 of 8 free throws in the game’s final 32 seconds, three offensive boards by the Lancers sealed the game.

Ada takes on county rival Hardin Northern in a sectional game at Bath on Tuesday evening.

The Lancers open tournament play the following night at Allen East against New Knoxville.
