PERRY TOWNSHIP — A youthful Jefferson boys basketball team had been very competitive in its first two games of 2012-13, falling to powers like Vanlue and Fort Recovery.
Head coach Marc Smith had been very pelased with his team’s performances both nights and simply needed that kind of effort as they hit the road to Perry High School for a battle with the Commodores Saturday night.
He got it, overcoming some early foul trouble, to post a 63-58 victory.
“We had a couple of starters that sat for a lot of the first half because we got into early foul trouble. We played better defense the second half and didn’t foul,” Smith noted. “We got to the free-throw line a lot and converted well. We are a team in process, as we will be as we gain experience and learn. This was another learning experience for us and we’ll be better for it in the long run, especially coming out with our first win.”
Despite the early fouls, the Wildcats still took a 19-7 lead at the end of one but saw that lead shrink to 33-24 at the half.
Perry outscored their guests 15-8 in the third to only trail 41-39 but the Wildcats held on for their 5-point triumph thanks to the charity stripe.
Helping the cause was the career-high 16 markers from freshman Trey Smith (3 steals) — one of them who battled fouls — and a career-high 12 by senior Zach Ricker to go with five assists; junior Austin Jettinghoff added 12. Junior Ross Thompson added nine points and 13 caroms out of the team total of 32 (25 for Perry), including an 11-8 edge on the offensive end.
Jefferson canned 15-of-36 overall (4-of-12 3s) for 41.7 percent and 29-of-42 from the line (69%). They added 14 turnovers and 21 fouls and will visit Crestview Friday.
Perry ended 22-of-48 shooting (6-of-14 triples) for 45.8 percent; 8-of-13 at the line (61.5%); 13 miscues; and 27 fouls.
