VAN WERT - Van Wert lefties Ryan Stoller and Andrew Todd stymied St. John’s Saturday as the Cougars routed the Blue Jays 10-0 and 11-1. The twin victories extended Van Wert’s winning streak to nine and its record to 12-4. St. John’s is now 4-9.
In the opener, only one Blue Jay got as far as second base as Ryan Stoller mastered the visitors with a 2-hit shutout. The lefthander struck out seven and walked only one, throwing 76 pitches (53 strikes) in his 6-inning complete game.
The Cougars got more than enough runs in the first inning alone — five of them — only one of which was earned. Centerfielder Joey Hurless led off by pulling a single to right and shortstop Nathan Stoller reached on a misplayed infield popup. Leftfielder Brant Henry smoked a double to the left-field fence, scoring Hurless and Stoller. Henry advanced to third on a ground out. After a strikeout, Ryan Stoller walked, putting runners on the corners. DH Jacob Braun’s grounder was thrown away, scoring Henry. Third baseman Terin Contreras blasted a fly ball to the base of the fence in left center, which was dropped, plating Ryan Stoller and Braun.
Van Wert added one in the second (Hurless double, Nathan Stoller single, Henry sacrifice fly) and another in the fourth (Hurless single, errant pickoff throw, Nathan Stoller single).
The Cougs made it 9-0 with two more in the fifth (walk to first baseman Andrew Todd, drop of Braun’s infield popup, Contreras single, single by second baseman Justice Tussing).
The game’s run-rule ending came in the sixth when Henry scorched a single down the left-field line, stole second and scored when rightfielder Tyler Williams lined a base hit to left.
Cougar hitters were led by Hurless (3-for-3, including a double, 3 runs), Nathan Stoller (2-for-4, one run, one RBI) and Henry (2-for-3, including a double, 2 runs, 3 RBIs).
The Jays’ two hits, both singles, came from rightfielder Clay Courtney and leftfielder Ben Wrasman.
Delphos starter Drew Wagner threw five innings, yielding nine runs, only two of which were earned, and nine hits. He struck out two and walked two. Gage Seffernick pitched to four batters in the sixth inning, giving up one earned run on two hits, walking one and striking out nobody.
In the nightcap, Todd disposed of the Blue Jays efficiently, needing only 66 pitches (47 strikes) in his 6-inning complete-game effort. The big lefty gave up one earned run and four hits, while striking out five and walking one. The Cougars pushed across a run in the first inning after two were out. DH Henry doubled into the left-centerfield gap, stole third and came in on a wild pitch. First baseman Kevin Agler led off the Van Wert second by reaching on a throwing error and catcher Sean Miller was plunked by Jays’ hurler Andrew Metzger. Rightfielder Jacob Hoverman put down a perfect bunt to load the bases. Centerfielder Hurless bounced into a pitcher-to-catcher force-out at home. Shortstop Nathan Stoller then drove in Miller by bouncing into a second-to-short force-out and Hoverman trotted home when the relay to first went awry. That made it 3-0, Cougars, after two.
Van Wert took command with three more tallies in the third. With one out, third baseman Cody Keirns beat out an infield single to the right side, then stole second. Metzger fanned the next batter but Miller bounced a single through the third/short hole, plating Keirns. Hoverman struck out swinging at a pitch in the dirt and reached first when the catcher couldn’t locate the ball. Hurless drove in Miller and Hoverman with a triple to the base of the left-field fence that was lost in the sun.
St. John’s dented home plate for the first time in the top of the sixth. That came on a walk to shortstop Troy Warnecke, a line single to right by first baseman Ryan Buescher and an infield bouncer off the bat of catcher J.R. Keirns. The Cougars ended it with an unlikely 5-spot in the sixth inning. Hurless led off by blasting a triple into the gap in left center. Metzger hit Nathan Stoller with a pitch; Stoller took second without a throw. After a strikeout, Todd reached on a bad-hop single to the right side, Hurless and Stoller scoring. Metzger then plunked second baseman Mason Krugh. C. Keirns forced Krugh on a bouncer, second to short, for the second out but Metzger then got his third hit batsman of the inning, Agler, to load the bases. Miller walked, driving in Todd, and T.J. Hoersten came in to relieve Metzger. Hoverman drove in Keirns with a flare single to left and Hurless drove in Agler with a walk to end it.
Van Wert hitters were led again by Hurless (2-for-4, both triples, 1 run, 3 RBIs). Other major contributors were Todd (2 RBIs), Keirns (2 runs), Miller (2 runs, 2 RBIs) and Hoverman (2-for-4, 2 runs).
The Blue Jays’ hits, all singles, came from Buescher, J.R. Keirns, Hoersten and Wrasman.
In his 5.2 innings of work, Metzger gave up 11 runs (9 earned) on eight hits. He struck out four, walked five and, in an oddity, hit five batters. Hoersten pitched to two batters in the sixth inning, giving up a hit and a walk. Both teams are in action 5 p.m. Tuesday: St. John’s hosting Versailles, Van Wert visiting Celina.
