Bearcats double victory total for 2013

SPENCERVILLE — Spencerville’s baseball crew started well Monday, getting a 3-0 lead over Northwest Conference over Lincolnview at Mike Whitling Memorial Field in Spencerville.
The Lancers pulled even at 3-3 in the top of the fourth and then the Bearcats finished the Lancers off by scoring five runs in their next three at-bats to grab an 8-3 triumph.
Bearcat starter Jon “Bubba” Shimp got the win with 5 2/3 starting innings (7 hits, 3 runs, 1 earned, 1 base-on-balls, 2 strikeouts; 101 pitches, 66 for strikes) and James Schaad came on to mop up (1 1/3 IPs, 1 hit, 1 BB).
The Bearcats (2-9, 1-3 NWC) got outhit 8-5 but took advantage of six free passes and two hit batters. James Schaad and Joel Shimp, the number 1 and 2 batters in the lineup, scored twice each.
Lancer southpaw Jalen Roberts didn’t give up a hit but walked three and hit two in his 2/3 of an inning, ceding three earned runs. Derek Youtsey (0-1) took the loss with 3 1/3 innings of relief (3 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, 3 BBs, 2 Ks) and Nick Leeth mopped up (2 IPS, 2 hits, 1 earned run, 1 K).
Wyatt Schmersal led the Lancers (4-8, 2-3 NWC) with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, while Connor McCleery was 2-for-4.
Both teams return to action 5 p.m. today (Spencerville at Fort Jennings and Lincolnview at Miller City), while Lincolnview is at USV 5 p.m. Wednesday and Spencerville visits Paulding Thursday.

Lady Wildcats grab track tri

DELPHOS — The Jefferson girls track team edged New Bremen and Bath in Monday afternoon’s meet at the Arnold Scott Memorial Track at Jefferson High School.
The Lady Wildcats barely edged the Lady Cardinals and Wildkittens 55-51-43.
On the boys side, the Cardinals had more distance between themselves, Jefferson and Bath 58-47-40.
Jefferson is in the Upper Scioto Valley Ram Invitational 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

Black shuts out Defiance in WBL softball
ELIDA — Elida freshman Michaela Black tossed a 30-hit shutout against Defiance Monday afternoon, leading the host Lady Bulldogs to a 4-0 Western Buckeye League victory at Dorothy Edwards Field.
Black struck out six batters and walked two, adding a run batted in in the 3-run fifth inning that gave Elida (8-7, 2-3 WBL) impetus.
Sabrina Kline and Aryanna Brown also had RBIs in that fateful frame.
Caitlin Shroyer and Brett Pauf each had two hits to pace Elida’s 12-hit attack.
Gallent had two of Defiance’s (6-10) three hits.
Elida hosts Kenton 5 p.m. today and visits Lima Senior Thursday.
