CONVOY- The Crestview Knights welcomed Northwest conference foe Jefferson to Crestview Sports Complex on Monday night for high school softball and pulled out a 5-2 victory to stay unbeaten in the NWC.

The Knights loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning with singles from Brooke Bowen and Terra Crowle. The Wildcats had the answer for the Crestview batters as Taylor Branham got the next two batters out to keep the game scoreless.

Jefferson got two of their first three batters on in the top of the second frame with a walk by Sam Branham and a single by Jessica Pimpas. The Wildcats put up two runs in the inning with an RBI single from Alexis Cook to bring home the second run and make the score 2-0, Wildcats.

The Knights had a big half inning of their own when Emily Bauer tripled and Mariah Henry singled to put the Knights on the board with an early run. With two outs, Crowle doubled home two more runs to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.

Crestview wouldn’t need any more runs as Crowle got 10 of the next 12 outs via the strikeout to hold down the Wildcats.

The Knights got another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Brittany Helt reached base on a dropped third strike and came around to score on a passed ball to make the score 4-2, Crestview.

Crestview tacked on another run in its half of the sixth inning when Bowen single to start the frame, stole second base and came around to dent the plate after Kirstin Hicks grounded out to third base to make it 5-2, Crestview.

In the top of the seventh inning, Crowle retired Jefferson 1-2-3 to end the game.

“Today was one of our better games; we hit the ball pretty well and put it in play. Defensively, this was also one of our better games; they got a lot of base-runners that were stranded. We did what we had to do to get out of those innings today,” said Jefferson coach Josiah Stober. “We played really well today; we played with only three errors for the game. Our defense stepped up and lifted Taylor up in some tough situations. They had bases loaded or two runners on in multiple situations and our defense was able to get them out by making plays. Taylor pitched her best game of the year and the girls rallied behind her.”

“I think one of the biggest disappointments is the first two innings — we left the bases loaded. And tonight we had a total of seven base hits; we just didn’t get the ball in play,” said Crestview coach Owen Pugh. “We were talking to the girls after the game and got inside, working on hitting the stations. We have kind of lost our focus. We just got to get back to meeting the ball and hitting it square.”

With the win the Knights improve to 12-7 on the season and are still unbeaten in the NWC (7-0). The Wildcats drop to 0-13 on the year (0-8 in the NWC).

Jefferson is slated to host Ada Thursday.

Crestview hosts LCC Thursday.
