DELPHOS — Van Wert took an 8-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings of its ACME baseball game versus Jefferson at Wildcat Field.
The young Wildcats, with the vast majority of their ACME regulars gone due to camps and such, fought back but the rally ended up short as the Cougars grabbed a 12-9 victory on a gorgeous Friday night.
The Cougars got two runs in the top of the first against Jefferson starter Jordan Herron, the lone regular from the spring team, on a 2-out free pass to Brandt Henry (4 runs scored, 2 walks), a steal, a run-scoring single by Nathan Stoller (2-for-5, 3 runs, 3 runs batted in) — taking second on the throw home — and an error.
Van Wert starter Tyler Williams struck out the first six batters he faced.
The visitors left two on base in the second (10 for the game).
In the top of the third, the visitors sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times. They compiled four hits — including a bases-clearing single by Ryan Stoller with two down and run-scoring hits by Stoller, Williams and Jake Williamson — and two walks.
Jefferson halved its deficit in the home half by also sending 10 batters to the dish and chasing Williams (for Kevin Agler). Two errors helped open the door; two hits (including run-scoring knocks by Damien Dudgeon and Tyler Talboom (2-for-5, 2 RBIs), four free passes and a wild pitch put them down 8-4. However, they left the bases juiced.
Van Wert left two more on base in the fourth.
Jefferson scored twice more in the fourth on two base hits by Herron and Talboom, both producing runs, as well as an error and wild pitch.
The Cougars put two more in the books in the fifth against junior reliever Talboom on an infield hit by Justin Tussing (2-for-4) and a pair of errors.
Delphos made it 10-8 in the fifth against third Cougar pitcher Jake Williamson on a leadoff single by Adam Rode, a bounceout by Cole Gasser, a wild pitch and a groundout by Elijah Eddie.
Van Wert got the first two on in the sixth on singles by Agler (3-for-5) and Sean Miller but Talboom got out of the frame with no more damage.
Van Wert went up 12-8 in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Agler and two earlier miscues.
Jefferson was still not done in the bottom half as they got a leadoff walk to Rode, a wild pitch, a passed ball, a free pass to Gasser and a 1-out infield hit by Gage Mercer to get within 12-9. A walk to Dudgeon chased Williamson for lefty Ryan Stoller and he fanned the next two to leave the bases full and end the contest.
Both return to action 6 p.m. Monday: Jefferson at Crestview and Van Wert at St. John’s.
