One Year Ago
The Bishop Neumann Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, presented the Rev. Jacob Gordon with a Memorial Chalice in memory of those members who died during his time at St. John the Evangelist parish. Those presenting the chalice Sunday during Rev. Gordon’s farewell at the All Saints Building were Dan Maag, Chris Klima, Ed Klima, Louie Kaverman, Jerry Klima and William Peebles.
25 Years Ago – 1988
The June meeting of the Elida Garden Club was a tour of the rose garden of hostess Nita Beckett of Briarwood. The group continued the subject of roses in exhibits and an educational talk by Mrs. John Szuch based on the article “Roses are Red, but Ann is Green.”Plans to attend the state convention at Oglebay, W.Va. were made for six members. Opal Leis will be voting delegate.
Tereasa Bockey, daughter of Ralph and Bev Bockey of Spencerville, received the All-State softball award at a recent ceremony in Columbus. Bockey was named to the all-state second team and was presented with a framed certificate. She is the second person in two years to be so selected from Spencerville. Peggy Coil received all-state first team honors last year.
Brenda Stepleton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Stepleton of Delphos, has been accepted at Owens Technical College. She will be majoring in fashion merchandising. Upon completion she will have an associate degree in applied business. Stepleton is a 1988 honor graduate of St. John’s High School.
50 Years Ago – 1963
The Cincinnati regional office of the Post Office Department has ordered that with the close of business June 30 the Ottoville-Fort Jennings Star Route, which formerly operated from Delphos, will be absorbed by the Star Route in Lima. Under the new system, mail sent from Delphos to Fort Jennings and Ottoville will first be sent to the Lima Post Office and rerouted from there to its destination.
Ottoville’s Up-To-Date 4-H Club approved the committee’s plans for a 4th of July float and named the following members to ride on the float: Peggy Gasser, Cathy Eickholt, Mary Eickholt, Sandra Perrin, Julia Tenwalde, Connie Heitmeyer, Ruth Knippen and Irene Hoersten.
Court No. 707, Junior Catholic Daughters of America will hold its annual Mystery Trip Thursday of this week. Members of the Junior Court are to meet at 11:45 a.m. at the home of Mrs. Moletus Osting and bring money for refreshments in the afternoon. A cookout will be held at 4 p.m.
75 Years Ago – 1938
The members of the Old Time Coon Hunters Association met in special session Thursday night at the Leo Hotz farm to make final arrangements for the ‘coon chase to be held Sunday. The chase will be held at the Alva Ditto farm, south of Delphos. Frank Osting was named field manager for the event which is expected to attract coon hunters from distant points.
Preliminary plans for attendance at the 20th annual convention of the Ohio Department of the American Legion to be held at Cincinnati July 24-26 were made Thursday night when members of the Commemorative Post, American Legion, met at their hall. Commander Ed. Murray and C. E. Fox were named as delegates from the local post and Ferman Clinger and Isadore Kindly were selected as alternates.
Delphos people will be interested in a broadcast which will be given Saturday through the facilities of the Mutual Broadcasting System. The members of the third annual American Legion Buckeye Boys State will tell their experiences and the knowledge gained in governmental affairs at Columbus. Gerald Will and Dale Van Meter are representing Commemorative Post of Delphos at Boys State.
