ST. HENRY — Coldwater’s baseball program has built up quite a reputation for its ability to knock the ball around, no matter what season.

Jefferson found that out to be true up close and personal on a brilliant and pleasant Thursday evening at Wally Post Athletic Complex in St. Henry, belting out 14 hits en route to a 10-0 6-inning victory to open the 2013 M.A.V.S. District ACME Tournament.

The Cavaliers (20-4) also got a 4-hit shutout by Grant Muhlenkamp, walking one and fanning eight in his 74-pitch effort (53 strikes).

The Cavs put a 2-spot up in the home half of the first against Jefferson starter Ross Thompson (4 innings, 13 hits, 9 earned runs, 2 free passes, 1 walk; 87 pitches, 48 strikes) on a 1-out double by Muhlenkamp, a single by Malave Bettinger, a run-scoring hit to right by Blake Spangler, a forceout by Derek Thobe and a wild pitch (with Adam Klosterman at the plate) that scored Bettinger.

Klosterman led off the Coldwater second with a walk but Thompson made a diving catch of a Jason Bills bunt attempt and doubled Klosterman up.

Muhlenkamp set down the first six Wildcats (7-12) until Jordan Herron got a solid single to left center to open the third. However, he was eliminated trying to advance on a pitch that got away from catcher Aaron Harlamert.

Coldwater made it 4-0 in the third. With one out, Muhlenkamp blooped a hit to center, stole second, advanced to third on a Bettinger grounder and scored on Spangler’s liner up the middle. Pinch-runner Harlamert swiped second and, after Thobe walked, scored as Klosterman sliced a knock to right.

Josh Teman commenced the Delphos fourth with a shot up the gut and advanced on a Jace Stockwell grounder and a fly ball to center by Thompson.

THe Cavaliers batted around in the home half. Mitch Schoenherr (2-for-3) bunted his way aboard to start it. Matt Kramer doubled to left center (leftfielder Hunter Binkley lost it in the sun) and both runners touched the dish on Brody Hoying’s ground single into center. He burgled second, advanced on a groundout by Muhlenkamp and aggressively scored on a pop-put behind second base by Bettinger. Spangler doubled to deep center and scored on Thobe’s triple to deep left center. In turn, he scored Coldwater’s ninth run on an infield hit up the gut by Klosterman.

The Red and White threatened in the fifth as Jake Pulford singled to left center but pinch-runner Tyler Talboom was caught stealing. An out later, Herron (2-for-2) lined one to left but was stranded.

The Wildcats loaded the bases in the sixth. With one out, Teman walked and advanced on a 2-out misplayed grounder hit by Tyler Rice. Austin Jettinghoff singled to left to juice the sacks but they remained so.

“You saw what we saw. They hit the ball where it was pitched and we couldn’t match up with them with the hitting,” ACME coach Mark Jettinghoff noted. “It’s not that Ross pitched a bad game; they just know how to hit. They don’t swing at any bad pitches and they take it where it needs to go.”

With relief pitcher Herron in for his second inning of work in the home half, Bettinger walked. Pinch-runner Kraig Schoenherr hustled to third on an error on a pickoff try and scored on a 1-out Thobe single that just got past third sacker Tyler Rice to end the contest.

“We had a good all-around game,” Coldwater ACME coach Tom Brunswick said. “We got continued solid pitching from Grant; he got ahead of most of the hitters. We hit the ball well, especially early. We played good defense.”

Jefferson will play St. Henry 6 p.m. today.
