RURAL MIDDLE POINT — Lincolnview boys golf coach Daryl Dowdy finished 7-21 overall in his first season at the helm.
He also ended up 5-13 in the Northwest Conference, good for seventh, and was 12th at the sectional meet.
He hopes to have a stronger sophomore campaign with the return of five lettermen from that crew.
All of them were part of the top six from last season, led by last year’s number 2, Derek Youtsey (sophomore), who registered a 49-stroke average over nine holes.
The third man was junior Damon Norton (52), followed by fellow junior Justis Dowdy (53), senior Troy Patterson (53) and sophomore Brayden Thatcher (55).
“I believe Derek will be one that will surprise many; he played very well last year as a freshman to average 49. We look for him to lower his scoring average to the low 40s,” Coach Dowdy noted.
The lone graduate from the 2012 season was number 1 Brooks Ludwig, who averaged 47, so the coach expects a much better season from his still young roster.
Two of the newcomers he expects to make a major impact and help to replace Ludwig are freshman Joshah Rager, fresh off a highly-successful Lima Junior Golf Association summer season, and senior Logan C. Miller.
“We are very team-oriented. These kids work very hard in practice to better themselves for matches,” the coach continued. “What we need to work on to really improve is the short game, the key to lower scores; be smart on the course and not take risky shots when we get in trouble.”
The remainder of the roster has Dylan Verhoff, Ethan Kleman, Taylor Strickland, Nick Motycka, Logan T. Miller, Gabe Evans, Braden Farmer and Logan Kraner.
“We look to improve our place in the NWC and all invitationals that we participate in,” Coach Dowdy added. “We need to continue to work as a team to help each other improve. I look for big things from this team this year.”
Lincolnview opens to 2013 boys golf campaign at home (Hickory Sticks Golf Course) 10 a.m. Monday.
