One Year Ago

The Van Wert County Fairgrounds, dotted with colorful lavender, yellow and rust-colored mums and bright orange pumpkins, hosted the community-driven 26th annual Apple Festival. Of the original vendors, Carl Lape, president of the Van Wert County Fruit Growers, remains instrumental in the production of the yearly event.


25 Years Ago – 1988

On Nov. 1, the annual 4-H Greased Pig Show will be held at Lugibill’s Brothers Livestock Buying, Columbus Grove. This show features the 40 pigs that were caught by 4-H members at the Putnam County Fair last July. Each member has raised his pig to market weight and will bring it to the show to be judged and entered in showmanship. The activity is sponsored by Putnam County Agricultural, local donors and Putnam County Swine Producers.

Ottoville senior Greg Kortokrax will make his third appearance in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Class A state golf tournament Friday and Saturday at Ohio State University, Columbus. Sophomore Jodi Ricker will represent her school in the High School Golf Coaches Association state tournament Sunday at Ohio State’s Gray course.

Oakland slugger Dave Parker has been to the edge of World Series defeat once before and came away a winner. He hopes history will once again repeat itself. On Wednesday, Parker found himself again facing sudden death in the World Series after the Los Angles Dodgers defeated the Athletics, 4-3, to go up by a 3-1 margin heading into today’s Game Five.


50 Years Ago – 1963

One hundred and twelve boys from the Delphos area participated in the Punt, Pass and Kick contest staged jointly by Raabe Motor Sales, Inc., and the Breakfast Optimist Club of Delphos Saturday at Stadium Park. First-place winners were: Dan Grothouse, 8, Michael Hedrick, 9, Nick Berelsman, 10, and Dana Sterling, 11.

Members of the Ladies Bible Class of the Evangelical United Brethren Church held their annual Hat Party Friday at the church. The session was opened with a song service with Mrs. Lowell Jenkins at the piano. Mrs. Fred led the singing. Nora Link presented the lesson using Psalm 143. Mrs. John Gruber and Mrs. Francis Scott will serve as hostesses for the November meeting.

Jay-C-Dels held a meeting Thursday evening in Jaycee Hall with one guest attending, Mrs. Stan Backus. After routine business was taken care of, bunco was played with prizes going to Mrs. Robert Grothouse and Mrs. William Mansfield. Refreshments were served by the co-hostesses, Mrs. Thomas Osting and Mrs. Arthur Utrup.


75 Years Ago – 1938

Mrs. C. F. Miller, Worthy Grand Matron of the Delphos chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and Myrddona Davies of Gomer, Associate Matron, will be in attendance at the state convention of the Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Star of Ohio, to be held in Columbus the week of Oct. 23. Others who plan to attend all sessions of the convention are Mrs. Dane Ridenour, Mrs. Harold Heitzman, Mrs. O. M. Arnold and Avanell Davies.

Delphos was represented at a banquet and “get-together” held at Van Wert Wednesday evening under the sponsorship of the Van Wert County Women’s Democratic Club. Bertha Schultz, Van Wert, president of the club, was in charge. She introduced C. E. Thornton of Van Wert, toastmaster.

Members of a Delphos contract bridge club were guests at a delightful house party given by Mrs. Robert C. Reul at her home in Lakewood. Mrs. Reul is a former resident of this city. Members of the party were Lucy Robyn, Mrs. George Helmkamp, Mrs. Richard Ricker, Mrs. Louis Justins, Mrs. Justus, Mrs. John Horine and Jane and Mary Brotherton.
