An after-school children’s event is planned for 4-5 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Delphos Public Library. Johnny Appleseed Naturalist Mark Mohr will present “Nocturnal Animals” in the activity room. The program is open to children in grades K-5. Children will also make “Almost Smores.”

 

25 Years Ago – 1988

 

A card party to benefit the cancer society was held in the Ottoville parish hall with 75 in attendance. Door prizes were won by Cathy Rellinger, Jayne Knippen, Mary Barnhart, Bertha Klima, Rita Hoersten, Bobbie Meyers, Carol Honigford, Euletta Reiger, Joyce and Larry Miller, Ceil Eickholt, Florentine Warnecke, Ted Kerner, Paul Miller, and Deb Burgei.

The American Red Cross collected 211 units of blood Thursday at Knights of Columbus. Fifty-seven volunteers, working 347 hours, and 12 Red Cross personnel from Fort Wayne assisted in the collection. The Rev. Ronald Stark gave the invocation and Dr. Carl Wehri was on call.

Catholic Daughters of the Americas will sponsor its annual benefit card party Nov. 8 at Knights of Columbus hall. Chairladies are Mary Lou Siefker and Helen Miller, assisted by Mary Steyer, Angela Kill, Mary Wauben, Ruth Baldauf, Doris Lindeman, Anna Rose Kleman, Veronica Luersman, Kay Dannhausen, Margaret Geeise, Mary German, Helen Odenweller and Ruth Calvelage.

 

50 Years Ago - 1963

 

The Delphos Psi Chapter was host chapter for a northern district meeting of Alpha Delta Omega National Sorority held here Sunday at Trinity Methodist Church. Chapters represented at the meeting were: Gamma, Muncie, Ind., Zeta, Union City, Ind., Theta, Fort Wayne, Lambda, Van Wert, Nu, Muncie; Pi, Richard, Ind.; Rho, Van Wert; Phi, Muncie; Sigma, Celina, and Tau and Psi of Delphos.

Plans for the annual spaghetti dinner were made during the meeting of the American Legion Monday evening. The dinner will be held Nov. 11 at the post club rooms. One application for admission to the auxiliary was accepted, that of Linda Ness. Catherine Becker and her committee were hostesses for the evening.

Arrangements of fall flowers graced the rooms of the Delphos County Club clubhouse Monday evening for the annual card party sponsored by the Ladies Golfing Association. Door prizes went to Rosemary Lehmkuhle, Mildred Rahrig, Rosemary Wolery, Ann Helmkamp, Cecelia Nartker and Jo Williams.

 

75 Years Ago – 1938

 

The work of moving the Delphos Community Oil Company, Inc. station from South Jefferson Street to their new location on South Clay Street will be completed Saturday. The station is being moved from the C. N. Hemker lot to ground leased from Al Garman which is adjacent to the Garman elevator.

The local Methodist and Presbyterian churches will combine for the Prince of Peace Declamation Contest which is part of a statewide contest being held under the auspices of the Ohio Council of Churches. There are three competitions in the local contest: Dorothy Jones, Walter Meads and Oliver Hoover.

Basketball, the major sport in Delphos, will be given some serious consideration by fans here Wednesday when St. John’s cagers open the season on their floor. Coach Richard Trame of St. John’s, announces his probable varsity lineup as follows: Grothouse and Vonderembse, forwards; Huysman, center; and Klausing and Ditto, guards.
