|On the Other Hand — How did this happen?|

I was talking to my mother a few days ago and she said something that struck fear in my heart. Yes, my gentle, loving mother said what no one wants to hear: “Ya know, it’s just three weeks until Christmas!”
I heard these mind-numbing words as I sat in my living room surrounded by bags, boxes and bins of Christmas decorations, my cards still in the boxes and little gumption to do anything about any one of those things.
How did this happen? Just a little more than a week ago, I was basking in the afterglow of turkey and pumpkin pie and now the pressure is on!
I’ve been trying to do a little something each day. The small tree and the moose are live in the front room and the outside porch decorations are up. The big tree, yes the tree we talked about last week, is still bare and sitting in the corner but I did fluff it out a few days ago in preparation of putting on the lights and ornaments.
In the meantime, I’m living out of laundry baskets, the bathroom needs cleaned and the refrigerator could use a good swipe with a hot, soapy dishcloth.
So here’s my plan. It’s Saturday and I don’t have anything to do until I go hang out with the Do-Rights later. I’m going to spring out of bed rested and refreshed from a good night’s sleep (said me hardly ever) and start tackling that list.
First things first: chocolate milk — check; Facebook newsfeed read, daily spin taken and words played with friends — check.
OK. Now I’ve only wasted about an hour, let’s get something finished on that list. I’m going to drag the snowman, lighted gift box and solar whatnots up from the basement and get them placed in the front yard. That will complete the outside deco. Check.
It’s time for some lunch. A leftover cheeseburger and banana yogurt. Check.
Next are the decorations for the kitchen, living room and front room. I’m hoping I was able to squirrel those away under the steps in the computer room. I honestly don’t remember but I know that was my goal — get everything possible out of the basement on the main floor. I guess we’ll see how I did.
Uh-oh. The hubby is home early. Really? Doesn’t he know I have stuff to do? Oh, well. At least I got something done today. We’re off to a family thing. See how it works.
I think I’m going to save the tree for last because the ornament bins go back under the stairs when I’m done. It’s also the most time-consuming yet most enjoyable part of decorating for me. I love to look at the ornaments and the surprise when I pull one out I had forgotten about and smile as I remember where and whom it came from. We also have a new White House ornament for the tree this year. It’s the best one yet.
Excited! Christmas is just 18 days away!
