DELPHOS — Jefferson’s Tuesday night Northwest Conference softball tussle versus Bluffton at Lady Wildcat Field could be the ultimate “what-if?” game.

The Lady Wildcats loaded the bases with no one out in the home first against Lady Pirate ace Sami Fruchey but failed to score.

That seemed to take the wind out of their sails — mightily helped by Fruchey’s throwing dimes from them on and a 14-hit Pirate attack — in a 10-0 5-inning loss on a gorgeous but breezy afternoon.

The game had been postponed from April 28.

“After last night (a 9-0 loss to Crestview that was tougher than the score indicated), we just did not have the same intensity and focus tonight,” Jefferson coach Josiah Stober observed. “Leaving the bases loaded in the first does beg the ‘what if?’ — how much different could this game have been had we scored at least a run there, if not more.”

Pirate coach Tony Rumer also felt that was a major turning point.

“Sami is our ace and she is usually steady from start to finish. She got through that and really took charge,” Rumer added. “It helps that our bats started rolling after that; that helps a pitcher settle in and get comfortable. We really hit the ball hard today and were finding gaps. Plus, our defense was on its toes, helped because Sami was throwing strikes.”

In the home first, Hannah Sensibaugh was plunked by Fruchey (8-3; 5 innings, 2 hits, 1 free pass, 1 hit batter, 8 strikeouts; 86 pitches, 60 for strikes), Claire Thompson walked on a 3-2 count and Jessica Pimpas bunted her way aboard as Fruchey tried to make a diving catch. Fruchey steadied and struck out a pair of batters around a pop-up to deny the hosts a run.

Bluffton (9-3, 4-2 NWC) went up 1-0 in the top of the second versus Thompson (2-10; 5 IPs, 14 hits, 10 earned runs, 1 BB, 2 Ks; 87 offerings, 63 for strikes) on a leadoff triple to deep left and a sacrifice by Fruchey (4 runs batted in).

The Lady Pirates made it 4-0 in the guest third on four hits, including a triple by leadoff batter Maddie Willis (scoring on a groundout by Olivia Hunt), and a 2-run double to deep center — just eluding centerfielder Sarah Thitoff (plating Mackayla Wilson and Abbie Parkins).

Jefferson’s (2-14, 0-7) next chance was a 2-base throwing error on Sensibaugh’s grounder to open the third but Fruchey fanned the side.

The visitors made it 8-0 in the fourth on an error, a sacrifice and five knocks that included RBI singles by Hunt and Parkins and a run-scoring groundout by Fruchey.

The visitors made it a 10-run lead in the fifth on a hit batter (pinch-hitter Grace Nickels), a run-scoring double by pinch-hitter Alexis Lawrence and consecutive knocks by pinch-hitters Anna Fredritz and Jazmynn Wilson.

The Lady Wildcats’ last chance was in the fifth as Sensibaugh lined to center with two outs but she was left stranded.

“I’m not sure why we were so different tonight with our intensity but I tend to put it on our immaturity as far as our youth and still learning how to play at this level,” Stober added. “That can take time to figure out how to be ready to go every night out. We played pretty good defense — only one error — but Bluffton hit it hard, too. Their pitcher — probably one of the better ones we’ve faced this year — did a nice job against us as well. We will learn from this and move on.”

Both units return to NWC action Thursday: Jefferson at Ada and Bluffton hosting Paulding.
