Big 2nd inning spurs Tribe by Lancers in D-IV BB

FT. RECOVERY — The host Indians of Fort Recovery sent 19 batters to the plate in the second inning of their sectional final game against Lincolnview on Wednesday night, scoring 13 times in the process. The Indians cruised from that point forward and knocked the Lancers from the Division IV tournament with a 15-0 5-inning victory.

“You can’t give up 13 runs in one inning and expect to win the game,” said Lincolnview head coach Kevin Longstreth. “It puts a damper on things when you’re trying to stay close and we are a team that needs to stay close to win. When you stay close, you give yourself a chance to win and today the second inning put it way out of hand for us.”

Lancer senior Eli Farmer, pitching on three days rest after leading Lincolnview to a win in the sectional semifinals on Saturday, retired the first batter of the second inning as the Indians led 2-0 entering the frame. The next six batters for Fort Recovery all reached, however, and each one of them eventually came around to score. Farmer allowed four hits in the inning but surrendered three walks as well. Two errors committed behind him didn’t help the cause, either.

The Lancers brought on southpaw Jalen Roberts to try to escape the inning but the nightmare was one they couldn’t wake up from. Roberts walked the first three batters he faced, the last of which forced in a run.

Once Roberts began to locate the strike zone, the Indians found success by swinging the bat. Blake Boughman, Jacob Muhlenkamp and Jackson Hobbs all connected on late-count fastballs to add back-to-back-to-back RBI singles, pushing the lead to 15-0 in just the second inning.

Hobbs held the Lancers off the scoreboard but did so despite pitching with runners on base for much of the evening. Lincolnview scattered five hits against Hobbs but the Indian right-hander struck out six while issuing two walks. The Lancer pitching duo of Farmer and Roberts surrendered 11 walks over their four combined innings of work.

“They had to pitch in the same conditions that we did and they didn’t have 11 walks,” mentioned Longstreth. “We just couldn’t find the strike zone today and it wasn’t a good day to pick to not find it. There’s no other excuse; we just weren’t getting it over the plate tonight.

“We didn’t really hit the ball bad tonight but a lot of the time when we got out, it was a strikeout. We’d much rather prefer to be a tough out versus a strikeout but, for the most part, for what we’ve done so far this season, we didn’t do too bad a job putting the ball in play. It was tough to get back focused after that rough second inning.”

Roberts managed to keep the Indians scoreless for the final two at-bats of the game, though he did allow three more walks during that span. Farmer took the loss, having allowed 11 runs (4 earned) on six hits and five walks in just 1.2 innings of work.

Fort Recovery got on the board in the opening inning when Farmer walked Cole Wendel, then served up a double to Elijah Kahlig, putting runners on first and second with just one out. Baughman grounded out to the third baseman, scoring Wendel, and Muhlenkamp walked before Hobbs knocked in Kahlig with a single to center.

Fort Recovery moves to 18-4 on the year and advances to districts, where it will meet Midwest Athletic Conference rival Minster in a game to be played at Coldwater 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Lancers fall to 7-12 on the season.
