CONVOY – After playing just two days before, the Lincolnview Lancers and Crestview Knights met at Crestview Monday afternoon in ACME District 5 sectional tournament action.

In the game on Saturday, the Knights walked away with a 14-0, no-hit win, but Monday’s game was much closer. Still, the Knights were too much to handle for Lincolnview as Crestview advanced with a 7-2 win.

In the second game, St. Marys Memorial edged Van Wert 1-0.

In the first contest, Crestview third baseman Jordan Miller doubled to open the home half of the first and eventually scored on a Lancer error.

The Knights added single runs in the third and fourth before Lincolnview could do any damage versus Crestview starter Zach Simerman.

After a leadoff strikeout to begin the top of the fifth, Dustin Hale and Keli Ralston had back-to-back singles before being advanced by a sacrifice bunt. Austin Leeth then belted one to left, scoring both runners.

The Knights retaliated by scoring two runs in the fifth, followed by two more in the sixth inning. Crestview brought eight batters to the dish in the fifth inning but only had one hit as they took advantage of three walks and two Lancer errors.

The two runs in the sixth came with two outs in the inning.

Simerman started the game for the Knights and allowed just four hits and two runs in his five innings worked.

“I’m very pleased with Zach’s start on the mound today,” said Knight coach Jeff Helm. “He gave us some solid innings and I’m proud of Jon (Krouse) for coming in and closing the door. They both hit their spots well today and we kept them (Lincolnview) off the base paths because of that.”

The Lancers have been eliminated from the ACME tournament and finish the tournament with a 1-2 record, with the win being over Jefferson on Sunday night.

In the second battle, hits were few and far between, each team managing just two hits on the day, but St. Marys had the only tally in the bottom of the first.

Van Wert was retired in order to begin the game but that was not the case for the Roughriders. Tristin Becker hit a hard grounder to shortstop but a defensive miscue got him to second and a sacrifice bunt advanced him to third. Matt Douglas singled to center, plating Becker for the game’s first — and only — run.

“The error was obviously a big play of the game and it happened so early,” said Van Wert head coach Karlin Dunlap. “It was tough luck for Willy (Jacob Williamson) but it is what it is. We have all the confidence in him and we know he’s a great shortstop. You can bet he’ll be back at short again tomorrow night.”

St. Marys starter Joe Pfenning carried a perfect game into the sixth inning but Josh Braun broke that up with a single to right. Braun was then forced out at second later in the inning before Ryan Stoller, who pinch-ran for Ryan McCracken, was thrown out at second trying to steal to end the inning.

Brandt Henry was the pitcher for the Cougars and he also pitched a very solid game. He allowed just two hits and the run that he allowed was unearned. Henry walked four and hit two batters but those didn’t come back to hurt the southpaw.

“Both sides pitched great tonight,” added Dunlap. “Pfenning pitched a great game and Brant pitched an equally as great game also. You get in a pitcher’s duel like tonight and sometimes just one run will win it; that was the case tonight.”

Van Wert threatened in the seventh inning as Justice Tussing singled to lead off and thenJoe Lisa was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with none out. Henry then grounded into a double play that just left pinch-runner Evan Williams standing on second. Caleb Fetzer struck out looking to end the game.
