DELPHOS — The planning committee for the third annual Laborers R Us community service project has announced the dates for the 2014 event as Oct. 3-5.

Buzz and Ellen Ditto of The Carpenter’s Ministry are the coordinators behind the event.

Homeowner and volunteer applications were approved and can now be picked up at Delphos Public Library, Delphos Chamber of Commerce, Delphos Thrift Store, Delphos Senior Citizens Center and area churches.

Projects are to be small minor repairs and miscellaneous house and yard work as well as a variety of other needs. Applications are to be returned to Trinity United Methodist Church, 211 E. Third St. by Sept. 1.

Approved fundraising for project materials will be done through donations, recycling and penny collection containers. Donations to the Laborers R Us Account can be made at The Union Bank in Delphos.

The Delphos Optimist Club is coordinating recycling of aluminum and larger items with Kohart Recycling on South Main Street in Delphos. Items can be taken to Kohart’s and designated to The Delphos Optimist – Laborers R Us account. Also, Laborers R Us “Pennies for Projects” containers will be located throughout Delphos at numerous locations. The community can begin now saving pennies to help purchase project materials.

Some homeowners are able to provide the funds for their project materials; however, some are not. It is the goal of Laborers R Us to be able to help as many requests as possible. Other ways homeowners can help is through their own “sweat quity” by themselves, families, friends and/or neighbors.

The vision and goal of the event is to engage and empower the people of the Delphos community in a week of service and celebration with each other. Each year, another work day will be added to the event week. High school-aged youth as well as adults and families are encouraged to become in involved.

Delphos City Council on May 19 approved the third annual Laborers R Us Community Service Event.
