KALIDA — The Kalida Lady Wildcats soccer team remained undefeated on the season Monday night.
They also kept pace with the Continental Lady Pirates in the race for the Putnam County League title with a 3-1 victory over the Ottoville Lady Green at Kalida Soccer Stadium.
Summer Holtkamp had a pair of goals and freshman Brittany Kahle added a goal and assist in the contest for the Wildcats.
Kendra Eickholt netted the lone goal for Ottoville.
The Lady Green got on the scoreboard first just under two minutes into the match when Eickholt delivered a shot that went off the crossbar; Kalida netmeinder Sarah Verhoff was out of position in the flurry of shots. Eickholt was in the right place at the right time to boot in the loose ball to give the Green a 1-0 advantage.
However, the ’Cats replied with three unanswered scores.
With 28:56 to go in the first half, Kahle tied it off a corner kick from Jackie Gardner. The sophomore sent in the kick from the left of the keeper right to the front of the net; Kahle was right there with a perfect header that took a 1-hop past Rachel Beining to tie the contest at 1-1.
The hosts had multiple attempts in the first half, outshooting the Lady Green 13-1 in the first 40 minutes, but Ottoville senior keeper Beining kept the hosts from getting the lead.
The second half would be all Kalida, not only on the scoreboard but in the ball control and field positioning as well.
Much of the 40 minutes were played in the Kalida offensive end of the pitch as the Wildcat defenders gave little green to the Lady Green.
Holtkamp scored the first of her two goals from just inside the 18-yard box with a shot from the left of Beining; the senior sent the attempt in and it found its way to the back of the net, making it a 2-1 contest.
As in the first half, the Wildcats had a plethora of attempts at the visitors’ net, with Beining answering the call more often than not.
With 5:36 to go, Kalida added the insurance goal as Holtkamp took a feed from Kahle and again from the left side about 10 yards out placed the ball past the Ottoville keeper, finishing the Wildcats’victory, keeping them undefeated on the season.
Both return to action Thursday night: Kaldia hosting Bryan at 5:30 p.m. and Ottoville entering Continental at 6.
