Aug. 30, 1914-Jan. 30, 2013 Rose Gertrude Pohlman, 98, of Delphos, died at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at Sarah Jane Living Center. She was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Landeck to Peter and Anna (Heitz) Miller, who preceded her in death. She married Clarence “Biddy” Pohlman, who died on Dec. 3, 1998. Survivors include two sons, Thomas (Judy) Pohlman and Ed (Betty) Pohlman of Delphos; a daughter, Mary Jo (Ted) Warnecke of Delphos; a sister, Mary Maag of Columbus Grove; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice Miller-Smith, Calista Miller and Lena Miller; 10 grandchildren, Russ (Laura) Pohlman, Terry (Chris) Pohlman, Sherri (John) Wannemacher, Michelle (Magnus) Olofsson, Joe (Amy) Pohlman, Doug (Kimberly) Pohlman, Kristi (Zack) Packard, Kelly (Adam) Dunlap, Scott (Penny) Warnecke and Chad Warnecke; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by six brothers, Clarence, Herman, Alfred, Leo, Arnold and Joe Miller; two sisters, Lillian Ellerbrock and Lucille Oberg; three sisters-in-law, Rita Miller, Katie Miller and Jean Miller; and two brothers-in-law, Rudy Ellerbock and George Oberg. Mrs. Pohlman was a homemaker and member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Delphos Eagles Aerie 471 and CLC of Delphos. She enjoyed her vegetable garden, was an excellent baker, enjoyed making pies and especially angel food cake and her noodles were a favorite of her grandchildren. She was also an avid bingo player. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Chris Bohnsack officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, where a parish wake will begin at 7:30 p.m.; and one hour prior to the Mass on Monday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to St. John’s Church, Alzheimer’s Assoc., or donor’s choice.

Jan. 15 1952-Jan 28, 2013 Gary Karl Germann, 61, died at 10:36 a.m. Monday, at Toledo Medical Center in Toledo. He was born January 15, 1952, to Glen and Yvonne (Githens) Germann of rural Van Wert. They preceded him in death. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb 2, 2013 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, Van Wert. The Rev Timothy Sims will officiate. Burial will be in Evangelical Protestant Cemetery, rural Van Wert County. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, Van Wert. Preferred memorials may be directed to NODC Care Bear Fund.

Paul H. Baumgarte, 91, of Delphos, died at 11:45 p.m. Monday at Vancrest Healthcare Center. He was born July 15, 1921, in Landeck to Raymond and Sadie (Clinger) Baumgarte, who preceded him in death. On June 24, 1945, he married Betty Byrd, who died in October 1987. Survivors include two sons, Dennis (Beverly) Baumgarte of Batavia, N.Y., and David (Julita) Baumgarte of Mystic, Conn.; two daughters, Carol Baumgarte of Delphos and Linda (Shawn) Chesley of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Baumgarte worked for IBM as an electrical engineer for 30 years. He was instrumental in helping build the second computer while working for IBM. He was given the opportunity to work with some top scientists including Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer and Thomas Watson. He retired in 1977, moved back to Delphos and began teaching electronics at LTC. He spent 23 years passing on his knowledge to the next generation. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, where he was sent to Radio School and then later traveled the world building radio stations. Baumgarte was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fort Jennings, the VFW, American Legion, Eagles, American Radio Relay League, Tri-county Amateur Radio Club and his call letters are WD8RJR. He was a 1939 graduate of Delphos St. John’s High School and a graduate of RCA Institute of Technology in New York City, with a communication degree. He was inducted into the St. John’s Hall of Fame for Professional Achievement in 2012. He was an active woodworker and liked to build electronics. He traveled to all 50 state capitals and traveled around the world, excluding a small part of China. He was an active member of the Delphos Veterans Council. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fort Jennings, the Rev. Charles Obinwa officiating. Following the Mass, the Delphos Veterans Council and Fort Jennings American Legion will conduct military graveside rites at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Fort Jennings. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, where a parish wake will begin at 5:30 p.m. Visitation is also offered one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Preferred memorials are to Wounded Warriors or donor’s choice.

April 20, 1939-Jan. 28, 2013 Ronald R. Grote, 73, of Cloverdale died at 3:25 p.m. Monday at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert following a two-year battle with Leukemia. He was born April 20, 1939, in Cloverdale to Melvin and Thelma (Bracker) Grote. His father is deceased, his mother survives in Cloverdale. On March 3, 1962 he married Marilyn Grubenhoff, who survives in Cloverdale. Also surviving is a daughter, Linda (Stewart Mills) Grote of Van Wert; a brother, Jim Grote of Cloverdale; a sister, Judy (Robert) Brinkman of Cloverdale; and his special little buddies, Sassy and Boo. Mr. Grote worked 14 years in maintenance for the Village of Ottoville, drove truck for J.P. Trucking for 10 years, worked as a mechanic for Mack Garage, drove truck for River Valley Distributing in Defiance for 25 years and was a farmer in partnership with B.B. and G. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville. He loved flowers, working in the yard, riding 4-Wheelers and NASCAR. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, the Rev. John Stites officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ottoville. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. on Thursday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Jackson Township, where there will be a scripture service at 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
