DELPHOS — The Lady Jays volleyball team dropped their season opener on Tuesday with a 3-0 loss to McComb.

St. John’s was tied 8-8 in the first set before the Panthers pulled away with a 10-3 run. McComb took the opening set 25-17 with solid play from senior Alysha Like.

The Panthers grabbed a 12-4 lead in the second set and forced the Lady Jays to regroup. St. John’s clawed their way back late in the set and drew within six points, but failed to close the gap as McComb hung on for a 25-18 victory.

St. John’s put up a battle in the third set after taking a 4-3 lead early on. The lead went back-and-forth and left the game tied 8-8 before the Panthers went on a 5-0 run.

The Lady Jays once again fought back late in the set and trailed by only two-points when McComb put up a pair of blocks to end the set 25-21, and the match 3-0.

“They fought hard in the first game of the year,” said St. John’s head coach Ashley Reynolds. “It’s a new coach and a new lineup. We also moved everyone around including a new libero so tonight was about working out the kinks with the new system. The girls hustled tonight and were talking a lot more, something I like to see. They never gave up and kept going at it until the last point.”

The Blue Jays stand at 0-1 while McComb improves to 1-0. St. John’s will host Lima Central Catholic on Thursday.
