OTTAWA — The trial for a Delphos man accused of the attempted murder of a friend will get underway on July 28 in Putnam County Common Pleas Court.

Jonathon Scott Welker, 45, is accused of stabbing a drinking buddy on Dec. 27, 2019.

According to court documents, Jonathon Hodgson called Putnam County 9-1-1 the night of Dec. 27 and said he had been stabbed and was being taken to a Lima hospital by a friends, later identified as Welker.

After undergoing emergency surgery for a large horizontal laceration to his abdomen, Hodgson later told a Putnam County Sheriff’s Office detective he and Welker had been at Wibby’s Bar in Kalida and were driving back to Delphos when he and Welker got into a disagreement. Hodgson told the detective he stopped his car along the road and asked Welker to get out and a physical altercation happened and that was when he was stabbed by Welker.

Welker’s story varies widely from Hodgson’s. He told detectives that after leaving Wibby’s, Hodgson said he was going to stop at a friend’s house and get some cocaine. Welker said Hodgson dropped him off at a bridge before going on to the location of where he was going to pick up the cocaine and when he returned, he was bleeding from his abdomen.

Welker is out of jail after posting 10 percent of a $100,000 bond.
