DELPHOS- The Jefferson Wildcats hoped to start the week on the right foot and they did in a big way thanks to a seven-run first inning to defeat the Miller City 11-1 in five innings.

Miller City plated a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from Caleb Warnimont to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.

Jefferson responded as they sent 12 men to plate in the first inning and scored eight runs in the on just two hits. Delphos worked deep counts that allowed runners to reach base in the inning. The big hits came from Josh Wiseman with an RBI single that scored two runs to give Jefferson a 2-1 lead.

Delphos continued to roll in the opening inning, driving the score to 7-1 when all was said and done.

“We took what they gave us as we had some walks, a couple of hit batsmen and we had guys step up,” said Jefferson head coach Doug Geary.

The home Wildcats continued to score in the second inning as Jacob Simmons sent a ball over the left field fence that extended the lead to 8-1.

Jefferson put their final touches in the score column, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Simmons hit an RBI double that scored two runs and extended the lead to 10-1. The final run of the inning came on an RBI groundout by Wiseman to give them an 11-1 lead.

Wiseman was just as dominant on the defensive side of the game as he pitched five innings and gave up one run on seven hits allowed and got out of some tough innings thanks to plays made by his defense.

“Josh is a senior and we expect him to give us quality starts and it definitely happened today,” Geary said about Wiseman’s day on the mound.

Jefferson improves to 3-3 on the season and is slated to host LCC Tuesday.
