DELPHOS — Delphos’ newest police officer has four paws and a tail. Officer Kratos joined the force in March and immediately began training with his human partner Patrolman Tyler Hayson.

“I’ve always wanted to be a K9 officer,” Hayson explained. “It’s the whole reason I got into law enforcement.”

Hayson has been with the Delphos Police Department since August 2018. Delphos lost its K9 at end of last year when the officer took a private sector job and the department thought it best for him to keep the dog. Hayson then saw his opportunity.

“We reached out to Al Gill of Von der Haus Gill German Shepherds & Police K9 Academy in Wapakoneta and explained what had happened and he was more than willing to help us out with a dog and training,” Hayson said.

That alone is a $14,000 savings to the city. Iams in Lima provides the kibble and Kessen Veterinary Services offers free health care for Katos making the K9 free.

Hayson and Katos trained for weeks before certification. The pair are proficient in detecting marijuana, heroin, meth, ecstasy, mushrooms and all their derivatives. He is also trained to track humans and apprehend them.

“It’s phenomenal the dog wants to do all this and it’s a game to him — and all he wants to do is play. ” Hayson said. “Most of the time, people just stop when you let the dog loose.”

Katos lives in Delphos with Hayson and his wife, Taylor, and his fur sister, Luna.
