CONVOY – Jaylen Jefferson rifled a throw from left field to gun down Sam Myers and end the game Monday night as the Crestview Knights knocked off the Lincolnview Lancers 4-3. With the win, Crestview will advance to the district tournament as the #2 seed from west sectionals.

Jaden Youtsey started off the bottom of the second inning with a triple to right and gave Lincolnview a chance to break the ice. Thad Walker delivered a laser down the right field line and drove in Youtsey as the Lancers drew first blood. Walker scored later in the inning on an infield error to make it 2-0. Myers reached base on a walk but was soon caught in a pickle between first and second. He was tagged for the third out of the inning, but not before Clayton Leeth crossed home plate and gave the Lancers a 3-0 advantage after two.

Controversy began to brew in the top half of the third inning that involved Youtsey’s positioning on the mound. After a slight delay, play resumed with him in a different stance. The forced adjustment had little impact in the third and Lincolnview rolled through the inning in order.

The Knights came alive in the fourth inning and put up four runs to steal the lead from the Lancers. Riley Saylor scored on a fielder’s choice after being hit by a pitch. Kole Small knocked in Griffin Painter with a single to center and a plethora of walks led to the four-run inning.

The Lancers had a chance to redeem themselves in the bottom of the fourth but stranded three runners on base and came away empty handed.

It all came down to the bottom of the seventh as Crestview starting pitcher Brant Richardson remained on the mound to close out the game. Myers led off the inning with a base hit and a sacrifice bunt by Collin Overholt moved him to second. Brayden Evans was clutch with a base knock before an error move both runners to scoring position. Braxton Fox stepped to the plate with the tying run on third and the go-ahead on second. He slapped a drive to left field where Jefferson positioned himself perfectly to make the catch for out number two. He delivered a pinpoint throw to Knight’s catcher Korbin Hartman. Myers was tagged well in front of the plate for the third out and gave Crestview a ticket to the district tournament.

“I kept telling them today to believe in each other and believe in your teammates,” said Crestview head coach Jeff Helm. I can’t single anyone out. It was a total team effort today, from the kids on the bench to the kids out on the field. I’m so proud of the kids. They have grown up and shown improvement over the summer.”

Lincolnview head coach Chad Overholt was proud of the way his team continued to improve all year.

“We battled all throughout the season and played several games with just nine kids. They really stepped up this year and hat’s off to the seniors. This was their last ACME game and it always hurts when it ends with a loss, but we have a really great group of kids here and they are going to get after it in the off season,” he said.
