VAN WERT – As of Tuesday, Van Wert County is now home to Ohio’s largest apricot tree. An Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry specialist measured the tree, located on Lincoln Highway near the Bicentennial Barn, and confirmed that it broke the previous record of a tree measured in 2008 in Wood County.

The apricot tree was planted in the 1970s by Lois Poling who still resides in Van Wert County. After measurements were taken of the diameter of the tree, the height of the tree, and the canopy of the tree, a tree index measurement was given. The local apricot tree was given a tree index of 157.9. The previous record holder was at 103, making Van Wert’s apricot tree quite a bit larger.

Jeremy Moore, owner of True Vine Tree Service, trims trees on the property and felt that the tree dwarfed the record-holder in Wood County. After taking some measurements himself, he contacted the ODNR to submit the tree to be officially measured. The tree measured 111.5 inches in circumference, 38 feet high, and had a spread of 33.6 feet.
