OAHU, Hawaii — Former Delphos resident Col. Greg Blythe is retiring from the Army after serving for more than 34 years.

COL Blythe graduated from Jefferson High School in 1976 and the Ohio State University in 1980 with a bachelor of science in zoology. He earned a DDS degree from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1984, at which time he was commissioned in to the Army Dental Corps.

“When I graduated interest rates were 15-18 percent for a loan,” Blythe explained. “The Army gave you a job right away, I could delay my loan payments for four years and I had the opportunity to go to Europe.”

In 1998, he graduated from the U.S Army Periodontics Residency Program at Fort Gordon along with obtaining a master of science degree in oral biology from the Medical College of Georgia. He is a graduate of the Army Medical Department Officer Basic and Advanced courses along with the Command and General Staff College.

COL Blythe has held several clinical positions and assignments including: General Dentist, 122nd Medical Detachment, Darmstadt, Germany; General Dentist, Fort Sill, OK; OIC, Sharm el Sheik, Egypt; OIC Garmisch, Germany; General Dentist 87th Medical Detachment, Augsburg, Germany; Periodontics Mentor AEGD 1 Year Fort Campbell Kentucky; Periodontist, 618th Dental Company Seoul, Korea; Deputy Commander Pacific Regional Dental Command and Periodontics Mentor AEGD 2-year program Honolulu, Hawaii; Fort Lewis DENTAC, Tacoma, Washington; and the Dental Health Command –Pacific in Honolulu Hawaii. Blythe also deployed with the 673 Dental Company to Iraq in 2011 in support of Operation New Dawn.

“My most satisfying assignment was in Honduras. I serviced a mountain village that wouldn’t normally never have dental care,” Blythe said.

COL Blythe’s awards and decorations are the Meritorious Service Medal , Joint Service Commendation Medal , Army Commendation Medal (4OLC), National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Multinational Force and Observers Medal, Air Assault Badge and the Expert Field Medical Badge. COL Blythe is the recipient of the Order of Military Medical Merit and the “A” Proficiency Designator by the Surgeon General. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology.

Blythe enjoyed his time in the service.

“I was glad I was active in high school because it prepared me for training. I’ve repelled from helicopters and I’ve become a periodontist at the same time,” Blythe said. “Now I’m ready to retire and travel.”

COL Blythe is married to the former Dr. Jauchia Wu from Taipei, Taiwan. His mother, Nancy Blythe, and sister, Laura (Jeff) Osburn, live in Delphos.
