DELPHOS — Local Eloise Shumaker is the 2019 Humanitarian Services Award winner for the West Central Ohio Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Shumaker received her award on Sunday at the annual volunteer’s dinner held at the chapter house in Lima.

The mother of four started volunteering with the Red Cross in March 2012 after retiring from the Allen County Auditor’s Office after 45 years.

“I talked with so many people through my job and I enjoy people,” Shumaker said. “I’m just not one to sit around home. I meet a lot of nice people and get to know them.”

Shumaker also spent her share of time in the chair donating. She has marked more than 28 gallons.

“I gave my first pint for a cousin’s daughter who was 5 years old and going to have open-heart surgery,” Shumaker recalled. “She’s 61 now and doing well.”

“When I retired, I decided to help with the blood drives,” Shumaker said. “Karen Jessco asked me to be a volunteer at the chapter house in Lima for the blood drives held there and I also help at the one during summer in Elida.”

Shumaker also volunteers at St. John’s Ministry Center, the Interfaith Thrift Shop and works the election polls twice a year.

She is the mother of Mike, Chuck, Joe and Amy (Nowak); and has seven grandchildren and nearly a dozen great-grandchildren.
