OTTOVILLE — Bettie J. Altenburger, 83, of Ottoville, died peacefully surrounded by her family at 8:40 a.m., Friday at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

She was born Aug. 19, 1934, in Ottoville to Anthony and Petronella “Nellie” (Greulich) Koester, who preceded her in death. On Feb. 27, 1954, she married Paul J. “Duck” Altenburger, who survives in Ottoville.

Other survivors include four children, Jeffrey (Linda) Altenburger of Ottoville, Scott (Kay) Altenburger of Troy and Terri (Steven) Metzger and Lisa (Mark) Vorst of Ottoville; 10 grandchildren, Todd (Julie) Altenburger, Ross (Kristen) Altenburger, Matthew (Jena) Altenburger, Kristen Altenburger, Lauren Altenburger, Jamie (Scott) Saum, Lindsey (Bryce) Newton, Michelle (Michael) Leach, Shannon (Jhered) Cusumano and Josh (Amy) Vorst; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Connie Lou Koester of Ft. Wayne; and two sisters-in-law, Margie Koester of Ottoville and Sis (Tom) Schimmoeller of Delphos.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Jim (Vera) Koester, Thomas Koester and Ralph Koester.

Bettie was part owner of J & P Trucking Inc. and had been a quality control inspector for Aeroquip for 20 years. She was also a homemaker. She was a member of The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Altar Rosary Society. She was a lifetime member of the Ottoville VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Delphos and Lima Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with the love of her life, Paul “Duck”, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and loved to visit with her sister. Bettie loved playing the piano and singing, playing cards with family and friends and traveling, especially to Florida.

A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Very Reverend Jerome Schetter officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ottoville.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Jackson Township, where a scripture service will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be given to Immaculate Conception Church Window Restoration Fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
