  • Cougars advance to state semifinal with 2-0 win over Versailles

    DEFIANCE – As Sunday’s ACME state quarterfinal game between Van Wert and Versailles went on, two questions were on most Cougar fans’ minds: (1) When would one of the many Van Wert baserunners finally cross home plate? and (2) When would Lawson Blackmore run out of pitches? The answers were fifth inning and seventh inning, respectively – which proved to be good enough for a 2-0 win.

  • Lions present scholarship to Ottoville High School student

    Ottoville, OH — The Ottoville Lions Club continued their support of community youth by presenting Ottoville High School student Abby Hilvers with a scholarship of $1000 for continued education. The club presented Miss Hilvers with the scholarship at Ottoville High School Honors night, May 15th. Abby is the daughter of Steve and Rhonda Hilvers and will be attending The Ohio State University majoring in Health Sciences on a Pre-Optometry track.

    COLUMBUS – Several rules changes will go into effect and teams are reminded of preseason practice regulations as 718 schools across Ohio begin high school football practice on Monday, July 30. Last year, 42,878 high school student-athletes played football in Ohio, the most participants among the OHSAA’s 26 sanctioned sports.

  • OHSAA, district athletic boards award $164,750 in college scholarships

    COLUMBUS – The Ohio High School Athletic Association and its six District Athletic Boards have awarded $164,750 in college scholarships to 191 recent high school graduates following selections made by each of the OHSAA’s six District Athletic Boards. The OHSAA’s annual college scholarship program is now in its 26th year.
  • Van Wert ACME heading to state tournament

    LIMA – Van Wert needed back-to-back wins on Monday to reach the ACME state tournament in Defiance. Lawson Blackmore and Owen Treece worked magic on the mound for the Cougars as they defeated the Shawnee Indians 2-1 and 4-1 and punched their ticket to Defiance on Saturday.

    SPENCERVILLE – The Fellowship of Christian Athletes delivered a message of faith, family and football at the US Plastics Legends Football Camp Saturday in Spencerville. The event attracted a number of college athletes and coaches as well as former members of the National Football League.

    LIMA -- After sitting dormant for a week, Limaland Motorsports Park was the place to be for great racing on Friday night. The JLH General Contractors FAST 305 Championship Series Sprint Cars took to the quarter mile bullring for the 2nd time in 2018 with Elmore, Ohio’s Alvin Roepke grabbing the FAST win in the Napa No. 99. Tony Anderson doubled up in K&N Filters UMP Modifieds feature and Bud Thunderstock feature in his No. 22T machines.

  • Maples mows down Elida in elimination game

    LIMA — Van Wert kept its ACME season alive with a one-sided win over Elida on Sunday afternoon at Player’s Field on the campus of Lima Central Catholic. Van Wert took advantage of five Bulldog errors in posting a 12-0 win.
