ELIDA- The Elida Lady Bulldogs kicked off their season on Tuesday night against the Lady Bearcats of Spencerville at the Elida Fieldhouse for girls non-conference hoops action. Spencerville picked up the victory over Elida with a 47-37 win.

The first quarter featured seven turnover by each side as both teams tried to settle in on Tuesday night. Spencerville got the first four points of the contest as a lay-up by Abbygayle Satterfield and two made foul shots from Nelaya Burden made it 4-0 Lady Bearcats.

Elida scored the final three points of the first period cutting the Spencerville lead to 10-9 as made fouls from Cienna Kuhn and Aubrey Vincent contributed.

“They did a great job of playing our guards really physical and actual played everyone really physical. They are a very athletic team and it took us a little bit of time to adjust. I think after that first quarter we were able to adjust and limit our turnovers,” said Spencerville girls basketball coach Greg Ekis.

Spencerville opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run featuring buckets from Alex Carter and Emma Leis. Elida responded with back-to-back buckets from Hailey Little and Kuhn to bring the score to 15-13, Lady Bearcats.

After the two minute mark in the second period, both teams hit their first three pointer of the night. Spencerville got a triple from Leis and the Lady Bulldogs quickly countered with a trey from Kuhn, 20-16 Spencerville.

A jumper from Vincent sent the Lady Bearcats into the half up 23-16.

With Spencerville up 27-18, Elida got back-to-back three point possessions as Amira Freeman hit a triple and Amiah Jones finished off a three point play. Elida’s quick outburst cut the Lady Bearcats lead to 27-24.

Spencerville countered and closed out the third quarter with an 11-0 run. Leis ended the third quarter with a three point play and a layup from Burden opened the scoring in the final quarter, 38-24 Spencerville.

With the Lady Bearcats up 14 points, Elida used a timeout with 4:53 left in the final period. The Lady Bulldogs came out of the pause hot, cutting Spencerville’s lead to 40-33 thanks in part to baskets from Little and Jones.

With under two minutes in the contest, Elida was forced to play the foul game and Spencerville went 5-8 from the foul line to ice away the game. The Lady Bearcats picked up their third win of the season with a 47-37 victory over Elida.

“I talked to the girls after the game. And we talked about learning where we need to get our shots at and taking our time. We got down in the third and fourth quarter and we rushed our zone offense and didn’t really execute. I don’t know if we got a little bit tired playing so hard or a little bit of the learning curve. As the season goes on I think they will get there,” said Elida girls basketball coach Roman Youngpeter.

The Lady Bearcats improve to 3-0 and will welcome the Paulding Panthers to Spencerville High School on Thursday night for the start of Northwest Conference play. Elida drops their season opener and will travel to O-G on Thursday night to kick off conference play in the Western Buckeye League.
