HAVILAND - Coming off of a loss to county rival Antwerp on Thursday, Wayne Trace bounced back with a win over a pesky Jefferson squad Saturday night as the Raiders recorded a 56-49 victory over the Wildcats in non-league boys basketball action.

Jefferson had only one lead in the contest, a 2-0 advantage thanks to a Colin Bailey basket to start the contest.

But the Wildcats never allowed the Raiders to pull away or put the game away until late in the fourth quarter either.

After the opening basket by the Wildcats, Wayne Trace scored 11 of the next 13 points to jump in front 11-4. However, Jefferson picked up back-to-back three-pointers from Trent Toman to close within 11-10 at the end of one quarter.

The Raiders again tried to open the game up in the second quarter.

A trey from Jace Vining started a 13-4 spurt that was also sparked by a trio of offensive rebounds and baskets by Cameron Sinn that gave Wayne Trace a 24-14 lead.

However, Jefferson responded with baskets by Hunter Mericle and Doug Long that, along with a Long free throw, helped the Wildcats trim the deficit back to 24-19.

“It was a battle tonight,” noted Raider head coach Jim Linder. “Jefferson played hard and they were more physical than us. Give them credit, they kept coming back any time we tried to put a run together.”

Late first half baskets from Reid Miller and Vining put Wayne Trace on top 28-19 at the intermission.

The third quarter saw Jefferson cut the lead to 35-29 after a pair of free throws by Long before the Raiders answered.

Two Cameron Sinn three-pointers along with baskets by Vining and Nathan Crosby allowed Wayne Trace to extend the margin to 45-34 entering the final stanza.

After a pair of Alex Reinhart foul shots to open the fourth quarter, the Wildcats made one final run in the contest.

Baskets by Ashton Moore, Hunter Mericle and Long quickly got Delphos Jefferson within 47-40 before a Sinn trey put Wayne Trace on top 50-40.

However, the Wildcats then answered with a pair of Ian Wannemacher buckets and a Trent Teman three-pointer that sliced the deficit to 50-47 with 1:42 remaining.

Two Reid Miller free throws extended the Raider lead to 52-47 with 1:18 on the clock before the senior guard added two more foul shots for a 54-47 Wayne Trace advantage with 49 seconds remaining.

After Wannemacher connected on a pair of charity tosses to get Delphos Jefferson back within 54-49, Cameron Sinn wrapped up the game’s scoring with a pair of free throws to set the final margin at 56-49.

“He hit some big shots for us and did a nice job of going to the boards and getting second chance points,” noted Linder of Sinn.

Sinn finished the night topping all scorers with 19 markers while adding three offensive rebounds and three steals. Reinhart chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds for Wayne Trace.

“Alex rebounded well again tonight,” added the Raider mentor.

Vining and Nathan Gerber both bucketed seven points for the red, white and blue with Gerber adding six rebounds and two steals. Vining also had a pair of rebounds. Miller contributed six points, five assists and a pair of boards as well and Nathan Crosby finished with four points and three rebounds. Cale Crosby picked up the final two Wayne Trace points as the Raiders improved to 8-4.

“We need to get some things cleaned up and we will get back to work this week,” concluded the Raider mentor.”

Wannemacher scored 16 points to lead the Wildcats while also posting three rebounds and two assists. Teman chipped in nine points and Long bucketed nine markers while grabbing three boards.

Mericle recorded six points, five assists and four rebounds with Moore getting six points and five boards. Bailey also finished with three points, two steals and two rebounds for the Wildcats, who drop to 4-8.

Wayne Trace’s junior varsity team moved to 11-1 on the season with a 41-25 win over the Wildcats.

Trevor Sinn posted ten points and grabbed three rebounds to lead the Raiders while Grayson McClure chipped in nine markers and three steals. Ethan Noggle posted seven points and five boards for the red, white and blue.

Race Price added four points and three steals with Tyler Davis recording three markers. Cameron Graham finished with two points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Nate Sinn, Landyn Whitman and Joe Munger all had two points as well.

Andrew Miller topped Jefferson with nine points and seven rebounds with Levi Rode chipped in six points, two rebounds and two steals. Caden Carter posted four points, five rebounds and two steals.

Logan Gallmeier, Cody Bailey and Cole Hoersten had two points each for Jefferson, who falls to 7-5.
