DELPHOS — Errors plagued the Jefferson Wildcats on Thursday night in their 10-8 loss to Lima Bath. Despite a poor defensive effort, Delphos remained in the game until the very end with the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“We scored a bunch of runs early and took a sizable lead but defensively we didn’t make routine plays,” said Jefferson head coach Doug Geary. “Mistakes like that will catch up with you and hopefully we will learn from it.”

Logan Murray took the mound for Jefferson and allowed three runs as Lima took the early lead. Logan Gallmeier helped cut the Bath lead down following a triple by Braxton Scalf. A single by Gallmeier scored Scalf to make it 3-1.

Lima extended their lead in the top of the second on a single by Austin Sakemiller to score Ricky Deppe but Jefferson bounced right back with two runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Gallmeier drove in Murray and Casey Knippen to draw within one run of Bath. They took the lead in the third inning with two more runs to make it 5-4, Delphos.

Lima tied things up at 5-5 in the top of the fourth when Deppe scored again, this time on an infield error. The Jefferson bats had one more inning of production in the bottom half of the inning and struck for three runs.

Gunnar Bodine, Scalf and Gallmeier all crossed the plate as Delphos looked poised to walk away with a win. The wheels fell off the bus for the Jefferson defense in the fifth and sixth innings.

A dropped ball in the fifth inning at the plate with two outs led to three more runs by Bath. Miscues continued in the sixth as Lima put up two more before Scalf was brought in to stop the bleeding.

“We had a lapse mentally and physically with our body language in the fifth and sixth inning,” Geary explained. “The guys rose to the occasion in the seventh and was one hit away from a tie ballgame. These kids battle and despite all the mistakes, they found a way to get through it.”

Jefferson put it all behind them in the seventh and had runners at the corners and an oppertunity to at least tie the game but came up short as Lima held on for a 10-8 victory.
