LIMA — St. John’s suffered their first loss of the season Saturday night when they traveled to Shawnee for boys basketball action. The 70-51 loss brings the Blue Jays record to 10-1 (3-0 MAC) on the year.

Aiden Rode had the hot hand in the first quarter, racking up 10 points that included one from behind the arch. Brady Grothaus and Isaac Fairchild helped pour it on early with 3-pointers and give St. John’s an 18-13 lead after one quarter.

The Indians offense began to fire on all cylinders in the second quarter. John Barker and Jarin Bertke each hit 3-pointers for Shawnee and George Mangas scored 10 points.

Brady Parrish racked up 9 points before the half that included a 3-pointer as the Jays tried to keep pace. Rode hit his second shot from downtown in the second quarter but the Shawnee attack was too much for St. John’s and they trailed 33-29 at the break.

Barker and Mangas went to work for the Indians in the third quarter. Barker landed three triples and brought his game total to four. Mangas had 10 points inside the paint and helped push Shawnee’s lead to 59-38 after three quarters of play.

St. John’s tried to rally in the fourth quarter but fell short. Rode and Parrish each hit 3-pointers for the Blue Jays in the final 8:00. Parrish finished the game with a team-high 21 points and Rode ended the day with 16 points.

St. John’s shot 42-percent from the field and 69-percent from the free-throw line. The Indians topped the Jays in boards 29-17 and shot 58-percent from the field.

Mangas had an incredible 28 points and Barker added 24 in the Indians 70-51 victory over the Blue Jays. St. John’s will host Coldwater 5-6 (1-2 MAC) on Friday.
