KALIDA — The Wildcat boys soccer team advanced to the District Semifinals with a 7-0 win over Spencerville on Saturday. Gabe Hovest had three goals for Kalida in their win as they move on to face LCC on Wednesday.

The Cats took control from the start and had two early opportunities to score but failed to hit the mark. An attempt at the goal by the Bearcats was defended by goalkeeper Brayden Recker, who held Kalida scoreless all game.

With 27:42 remaining in the first half, Hovest found a gap and put the ball in the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later it was Zach von der Embse that landed a head-shot in the net for Kalida’s second goal of the game.

Hovest scored for a second time with 13:53 left in the half to extend the Wildcats lead to 3-0. Just :44 seconds later, Aden Fersch slipped bast Spencerville defenders and had a one-on-one opportunity. He blasted it past goalkeeper Dominic Adkins to bring the score to 4-0.

The Bearcat defense held Kalida in check for the remainder of the half and the scoreboard held at 4-0.

Hovest nailed his third goal of the day in the second half. Colin Erhart and Mason Kerner also found the back of the net for the Wildcats before the game concluded. Kalida held on for a 7-0 shutout and a ticket to the District tournament later this week.
