OTTAWA — Good starts helped carry the Kalida and Columbus Grove boys basketball teams to Division IV sectional final wins Friday night at Ottawa-Glandorf High School.

In the first game, the Wildcats grabbed a six point lead after one quarter on their way to a 47-37 win over Patrick Henry. In the nightcap, the Bulldogs had a double digit lead after the opening quarter on their way to a 69-46 win over North Baltimore.

The wins send the two Putnam County League rivals to the Division IV district semi-finals at Liberty-Benton High School Tuesday where they will face each other at 8 p.m. The first game has PCL squads Miller City and Pandora-Gilboa playing at 6:15 p.m.





Kalida got off to a good start outscoring the Patriots 16-10 in the first quarter. Patrick Henry battled back in the second quarter to outscore the Wildcats 13-8 to trail 24-23 at halftime. The Wildcats shook off the second quarter comeback by the Patriots to post a 9-0 scoring run in the third quarter to take a 33-23 lead to the final quarter, where both teams scored 14 points.

Trevor Lambert paced the Kalida win with 16 points as he buried three three-pointers. Grant Laudick added 13 points and Luke Erhart scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Xavier Wensink paced the Patriots with 14 points and seven rebounds.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs shocked second seeded North Baltimore early on their way to the win.

Columbus Grove came out firing and played good defense in grabbing a 22-6 lead after eight minutes. The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 19-14 in the second quarter to trail 36-25 at halftime before Grove regained control of the game in the third quarter with a 13-6 scoring advantage.

The Bulldogs finished the game with 20-15 scoring advantage.

Freshman Tayt Birnesser paced the Bulldog win with a game high 18 points, while Logan Schroeder had 17 points and Logan Malsam finished with 16 points.

Columbus Grove sealed their win at the free throw line as they were 26-of-34 at the charity stripe in the game. North Baltimore was 10-of-17 at the line.

Tyler Durfey paced the Tigers with 11 points and Levi Gazarek finished with nine points.
