FINDLAY — The Spencerville Bearcats came into Liberty-Benton high school looking to take down a very good Lady Eagle squad on the road but the home Eagles had an answer from Lauren Gerken as she poured in a tournament high 33 points to help her team past Spencerville 58-30.

The game of cat and mouse was being played by both teams in the opening quarter with the Eagles taking a quick 4-0 lead with free-throws from Gerken and a basket by Lauren Smith. Senior Emma Leis got the Bearcats in the scoring column at the 5:56 mark with a bucket to cut the deficit to a deuce at 4-2. The Bearcats got within two again with free-throws from Gillian Goecke but the Eagles extended at the end of the quarter with a three-pointer from Riley Irwin and a basket by Smith to give them an 11-6 lead.

Gerken asserted herself once again with a nine point second quarter but the Bearcats wouldn’t go away just yet with four points coming in the quarter from Goecke as the Bearcats came from being 14-6 early in the quarter to just being down 16-14. Gerken and Irwin were a part of a 10-3 run to end the first half as Spencerville found themselves down 26-17 at halftime.

“I thought our effort was good tonight and they played hard and tough and Liberty-Benton is a good team,” Spencerville Head coach Greg Ekis talking about the loss to the Lady Eagles.

Gerken wasn’t done to begin the second half as she poured in 12 points in the quarter as she helped her team put the foot on the gas pedal in the third quarter as they outscored the Bearcats 18-3 in the quarter. The Bearcats points in the quarter came on a basket by Lilyan Goecke and a free-throw by Gillan Goecke put the Bearcats down 44-20 into the fourth quarter of play.

Liberty-Benton settled things down in the final chapter with scoring 14 points in the quarter as the game drew to a close as Gerken scored eight points in the quarter before the reserves came to finish off a 13th straight sectional championship for the home Eagles. Gerken has now scored back to back 30 point games to begin her first tournament appearance as a freshman as she tallied 31 points in their win on Thursday over Fostoria. It was the final Bearcat basketball game for Seniors Gillian Goecke, Emma Leis, and Raigan Staup.

“Our three seniors have been great for our program and they battled for four years and I am very proud of them.” Ekis talking about the final for his senior class.
