LIMA — Elida, the top-seed out of the District 5 East Division, topped St. John’s, the 2nd-seed out of the West, 7-2 in the District 5 Acme tournament Friday.

The Blue Jays will return Saturday morning at 11:00 to face St. Mary’s in an elimination game. The Roughriders lost to Van Wert 2-1 in Friday’s second game. Elida will play Van Wert in Saturday’s second game at approximately 1:15.

Elida starter Noah Bowman took immediate command of the game, consistently throwing strikes as the Bulldogs rolled to a 4-0 lead after five innings, during which he threw only 69 pitches, of which 47 were strikes.

The game got interesting in the top of the sixth, however. The Blue Jays’ first four batters all reached base — walk (centerfielder Zane Wertenberger), single (starting pitcher Trent Lindeman), walk (first baseman Lincoln Mueller), throwing error (grounder by rightfielder Blake Fischbach, scoring Wertenberger). A sac fly to left by starting third baseman Gavin Becker drove in Lindeman, closing the gap to 4-2.

The close game didn’t last long. Elida rebounded with three runs off of reliever Becker in the bottom of the sixth to seal the deal.

Elida had six hits — shortstop Luke Burger (3 for 3, including a double, one run scored), first baseman Hayes Burton (1 for 2, two RBI), Bowman (1 for 3, a double, one run scored, two RBI), and sub first baseman Noah Adcock (1 for 1, one run scored).

Delphos hit safely five times — Lindeman (2 for 3, one run scored), Becker (2 for 2, one RBI), and leftfielder JJ Bonifas (1 for 3).

Lindeman had a solid outing on the bump — four runs, all earned, and four hits in five innings while striking out eight, walking three, and hitting a batter.

Bowman was better yet — two runs, both earned, five hits, in six innings, striking out five, walking three. He was relieved by Camren Howard to start the seventh, and Howard retired the Jays 1-2-3.
