DELPHOS — Van Wert rallied in the seventh inning to beat the Wildcats on a hot and sticky Friday evening at Stadium Park. Ethan Rupert and Breckin Boroff each drove in three runs in the Cougars 16-11 victory over Jefferson.

After an uneventful two innings, Van Wert got on the board when Boroff singled to right, scoring Xavier Okuly and Luke Wessell to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.

The Cats struck back in the bottom half of the inning and took advantage of an error that scored Braylon Scalf. Van Wert responded in the fourth inning with two more runs and extended their lead to 4-1.

The tide began to shift in the bottom of the fourth as Jefferson accounted for eight runs. After walking in a pair of runs, Logan Murray singled to left field and tied the game at 4-4.

An infield grounder sent Jaden Lucas around to score and gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game. With two outs, Jacob Simmons hit a three RBI double to extend Jefferson’s lead to 8-4. Simmons crossed the plate later in the inning to give the Cats a 9-4 advantage heading in to the fifth inning.

Van Wert took the lead once again in the top of the fifth. Wessell singled to right field and scored Ethan Mooney and Joshua Reichert before Boroff blasted one to center to cut Jefferson’s lead down to two runs.

Boroff scored on a single by Gavin McMichael as the Cougars looked to strike late in the game. Kaiden Bates tripled to send McMichael around to score and tie the game at 9-9. Bates crossed home plate on an error and gave Van Wert a 10-9 lead.

The battle continued in the bottom of the fifth when Logan Herron scored on an infield error and Cody Bailey gave the Wildcats a one run lead when he crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Cougars tied things up in the top of the sixth when TJ Stoller scored on a single by Ethan Mooney before erupting for five runs in the seventh inning. Wessell held Jefferson in check to close out the game with four strikeouts through three innings of work.

“We had some problems with defense today,” said Jefferson head coach Doug Geary, “We were not very good with the fundamentals and I hope we learn from it. Give credit to Van Wert for putting the ball in play and hitting it hard. They took care of business today.”
